Definitions of terminology

Watches & Warnings - What do they mean?

A watch or warning can be issued by the National Weather Service for any severe or potentially dangerous weather event, such as floods, thunderstorms, tornados, or winter weather. 

A watch is issued, usually well in advance of approaching weather, to alert the public that there is potential for the named weather event to occur in their region.

A warning is issued when it has been determined that the named weather event is imminent for their region.
